The Chemical Reconciliation: Calculating Actual Ash Absorption

In precision cement manufacturing, assuming 100% ash absorption is often a starting point, but true quality control requires calculating the actual amount of fuel ash that incorporates into the clinker. This calculation allows chemists to reconcile the difference between the "theoretical" clinker (from the raw meal) and the "actual" clinker produced.

Concept and Definition

Ash absorption is the process by which the mineral matter of a solid fuel (like coal or petcoke) becomes a chemical constituent of the clinker. Because fuel ash is rich in silica, alumina, and iron, its absorption changes the final oxide ratios, specifically lowering the Lime Saturation Factor (LSF). By comparing the analysis of the ash, the clinker, and the LOI-free raw mix, we can determine the exact percentage of ash that successfully combined with the material.

The Analytical Formula

To determine the actual percentage of coal ash absorbed in clinker, the industry uses a method that averages the absorption rate across the four major oxides: Calcium (CaO), Silicon (SiO2), Aluminum (Al2O3), and Iron (Fe2O3).

First, calculate the absorption factor (X) for each oxide:

  • X1(CaO): (clinker−CaOrawmix)/(CaOash−CaOrawmixCaO)
  • X2(SiO2): (clinker−SiO2 rawmix)/(SiO2 ash−SiO2 rawmixSiO2)
  • X3(Al2O3): (clinker−Al2O3 rawmix)/(Al2O3 ash−Al2O3 rawmixAl2O3)
  • X4(Fe2O3): (clinker−Fe2O3 rawmix)/(Fe2O3 ash−Fe2O3 rawmixFe2O3)

The Actual Ash Absorption (%) is the arithmetical mean of these four values: Percent Ash in Clinker=4X1+X2+X3+X4

(Note: All raw mix values must be on a loss-free basis for this calculation to be accurate.)
