Temporal Optimization: Clinker Residence Time in the Cooler (RTC)
In the final stage of pyroprocessing, Clinker Residence Time (t) is the essential temporal variable that determines the efficiency of heat recuperation and the physical safety of downstream handling equipment. It defines the duration clinker remains within the cooling system, directly influencing the final temperature and mineralogical stability of the product.
Definitions and Core Concepts
- Residence Time (t): The total time clinker takes to travel from the kiln discharge (cooler inlet) to the cooler outlet.
- Clinker Bed Depth (h): The thickness of the clinker layer on the grates. In grate coolers, maximizing bed depth (typically 400–800 mm) increases heat exchange efficiency.
- First Chamber Pressure (Ps): The undergrate pressure in the first compartment. This pressure is a direct function of the clinker bed depth (h); a thicker bed exerts higher resistance, requiring higher pressure to penetrate.
- Grate Speed: The primary control for residence time. Increasing grate speed reduces clinker residence time and bed depth, leading to lower secondary air temperatures.
- Recuperation Zone: The initial section of the cooler where the most intensive heat transfer occurs, typically requiring a specific residence time to "freeze" the clinker's chemical state
Calculation Methodologies
To determine residence time based on cooler geometry and operational loading, process engineers use the following formulas:
General Residence Time Formula:
t=(60⋅Ac⋅h⋅ρ)/Prod
- t: Clinker residence time (min).
- Ac: Effective area of the cooler grate (m2 or ft2).
- h: Bed depth (m or ft).
- ρ: Clinker bulk density (typically 1200–1570 kg/m3).
- Prod: Kiln output (kg/h or lb/h).
Pressure-Linked Residence Time: Because bed depth (h) is often difficult to measure directly, it is estimated using the First Chamber Undergrate Pressure (Ps). Undergrate air pressure is maintained at a setpoint (e.g., ~600 mm WG at the inlet) to ensure proper bed depth and residence time.
t=(15.805⋅Ac⋅Ps)/Prod
- t: Clinker residence time (min).
- Ac: Effective area of the cooler grate (m2).
- Ps: First Chamber Static Pressure (mbar).
- Prod: Kiln output (tpd).
Note: this is an empirical formula for t(min) calculation.
- Relationship: As clinker output increases, grate speed must increase to maintain constant Ps. If grate speed is not adjusted, Ps will rise as the bed thickens, increasing the residence time (t).
