The Net Calorific Value of Natural Gas
In cement pyroprocessing, natural gas is often favored for its "clean" combustion and ease of handling. However, its specific thermodynamic behavior—particularly its high hydrogen content—requires a rigorous understanding of the Net Calorific Value (NCV) to maintain accurate thermal balances and clinker quality.
Comprehensive Definitions
- Net Calorific Value (NCV/LHV/Hi): This represents the heat evolved during complete combustion under constant pressure, assuming the water produced remains in a gaseous state.
- Gross Calorific Value (GCV/HHV/Hs): The total heat released assuming all water vapor is condensed into liquid, recovering the latent heat of vaporization.
- The Latent Heat Gap: For natural gas, the difference between GCV and NCV is significantly higher (~10%) than for coal (~2–3%) because gas is rich in methane (CH4), which generates more water vapor per unit of heat.
Calculation Methodologies
NCV is calculated by summing the net heat contributions of each constituent hydrocarbon based on a volumetric analysis.
Standard Volumetric Formulas:
- Metric (kcal/Nm3): Hi=90.3(CH4)+159.2(C2H6)+229(C3H8)+301.9(C4H10)+373.8(C5H12)+57.6(H2S)
- English (Btu/ft3): Hi=10.146(CH4)+17.89(C2H6)+25.73(C3H8)+33.92(C4H10)+42.0(C5H12)+6.47(H2S)
- SI Units (kJ/Nm3): Hi=358.83(CH4)+643.45(C2H6)+932.07(C3H8)+1238.10(C4H10)+595(C5H12)
Conversion Thumb Rule: Where a full analysis is unavailable, Hs≈1.11×Hi.
Typical Industrial Data
Natural gas properties vary by source, but generally fall within the 8,000 to 10,000 kcal/Nm3 range.
