Thermodynamic Benchmarking: Mastering the Standard Coal Factor (SCF)

In kiln process engineering, precisely calculating combustion air is critical for thermal efficiency. While an ultimate analysis of coal is the preferred data source, it is often unavailable in real-time operational environments. The Standard Coal Factor (SCF) serves as a professional-grade empirical tool to bridge this gap, allowing engineers to determine air requirements based on moisture and heating value alone.

Concept and Definition

The Standard Coal Factor (SCF) is a dimensionless ratio that standardizes the energy content of a specific coal against a "standard" coal. This standard is typically defined as coal having a heating value of 7,000 kcal/kg (metric) or 12,600 Btu/lb (English). By calculating this factor, you can determine the stoichiometric air needed to burn the fuel, typically including a safety margin for excess air.

Calculation Methodologies

The formulas for SCF vary depending on the system of units employed.

a, English System of Units:

 SCF=[(100−m)/100]×b(12,600)

Where,

  • m: Percent moisture in coal (as fired).
  • b: Heat value of coal (Btu/lb as fired).
  • Resulting Air Requirement: 10.478×SCF=lb air / lb coal.
  1. b, Metric System of Units:

SCF=[(100−m)/100]×B(7,000)

Where,

  • m: Percent moisture in coal (as fired).
  • B: Heat value of coal (kcal/kg as fired).

Or

SCF=[(100−m)/100]×B(29,253)

  • m: Percent moisture in coal (as fired).
  • B: Heat value of coal (kJ/kg as fired).

  • Resulting Air Requirement: 10.478×SCF=kg air / kg coal.

Note: These air requirement calculations automatically include 5% excess air.
