Stoichiometric Combustion Air (SSCA) from Coal NCV

In process engineering, while an ultimate analysis provides the most precise combustion data, it is often necessary to estimate air requirements using only the Net Calorific Value (NCV) of the coal. The Stoichiometric or Minimum Combustion Air (Lmin) represents the theoretical dry atmospheric air required to provide enough oxygen for the complete oxidation of the fuel's carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur content.

Concept and Definitions

  • Stoichiometric Air (SSCA): The exact mass of air required to reach a "neutral" combustion state where no free oxygen (O2) remains, and no carbon monoxide (CO) is formed.
  • Net Calorific Value (NCV/LHV): The usable heat released during combustion, assuming the moisture in the fuel and water produced by hydrogen oxidation remains in a gaseous state.
  • The Energy-Air Relationship: In industrial pyroprocessing, there is a nearly linear relationship between the heat released and the air required for oxidation, allowing process engineers to use the NCV as a reliable proxy for air weight calculations.

Calculation Methodologies

There are many empirical formulas. Above, we have mentioned one typically used in the cement industry. To convert mass flows into volume flows, you can use the normal air density of 1.293 kg/Nm3

Importance in Cement Manufacturing

  • Induced Draft (ID) Fan Management: The ID fan is a common bottleneck for kiln production. Knowing the SSCA allows engineers to determine if a specific fuel type will overload the fan's mass flow capacity.
  • Thermal Efficiency Optimization: For every 1.0% of free O2 (excess air) in the exit gas, the kiln loses approximately 0.4% of the total heat introduced by the fuel. Reliable SSCA calculations ensure the kiln operates within the optimized range of 1.0% to 1.5% O2.
  • Safety Interlocks: Precise air-to-fuel ratios are mandatory to prevent CO concentrations from exceeding 100 ppm, which risks electrostatic precipitator explosions and "brown" clinker formation.
